Kitwe

Overview

Copper is the backbone of the Zambian economy, and Kitwe is right in the heart of the copper producing area. Kitwe is the major industrial and commercial centre of the area.

The city owes its existence to the copper mining industry but has seen a great deal of growth as a secondary and tertiary centre.

History

Kitwe has a small airstrip that is serviced by Air Zambia from Lusaka. Depending on the season sometimes this can be damaged by rain, rendering it inoperable. If this is the case, nearby Ndola is an alternative as they are linked by a well maintained double carriageway and it is under an hours drive beween the two towns.
