West Virginia
Overview
A state that is quietly interesting is certainly one way to describe West Virginia. Exploration will undoubtedly reveal the main historical, natural and cultural attractions. These await the visitor amidst rivers, mountains and forests which in themselves will be a draw for some. National Parks include the New River Gorge National River, Bluestone National Scenic River and the Gauley River National Recreation Area. Within these, outdoor pursuits are not hard to find, such as white water rafting, hiking and rock climbing. The colder times of year mean areas such as Snowshoe Mountain, White Grass and the Elk River Touring Center allow cross-country skiing amongst other things. Hunters and anglers may prefer the Mid-Ohio Valley while those content with observation may prefer the wildlife at the Ohio river Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Raceways, Civil War battle sires and the opportunity to try making stained glass windows are other slightly more unusual attractions. The site of the last battle of the American Revolution at Wheeling, the Adena Indian burial ground near Moundsville and the Capitol in Charleston, the state capitol are just some of the important sights that can be seen.
