Overview

A particularly generous range of beaches, heritage trails and quiet cities await the visitor who should find it easy to relax. This is also true for families that have ventured into the New England state. They will find many activities, especially on some of the beaches to keep children entertained during the long holidays. All ages will find activities such as surfing, jet skiing and kayaking available and will quickly notice the heavy emphasis on the water based possibilities. This probably finds its zenith at Newport. Here the fondness for sailing will not go unmissed and neither will the mansions some of which are open for viewing, which date back to the Gilded age. Another resort which is of an older style is that of Block Islands with lots of walking and cycling opportunities. The Newport Cliff Walk near Easton’s Beach also allows enjoyment of a pleasantly typical beach. If beaches are not the only reason for a visitor’s trip then other distractions include the Purgatory Chasm, the Norman Bird Sanctuary, many heritage trails, a cruise on the Blackstone Valley Explorer or an example of the early American Industrial Revolution at the Slater Mill Historic Site.
