Overview

Founded in 1731 as Willingtown, Wilmington is the corporate capital of the world, with over half of the Fortune 500 companies incorporated there.  Home to DuPont and MBNA America, Wilmington is the biggest city in the state of Delaware.

Wilmington is located along the I-95 Northeast Corridor, approximately equal distance to New York City and Washington, DC.  With its close proximately to those cities, along with Philadelphia and Baltimore, Wilmington is an important city in the Northeast Megalopolis.

Situated along the Delaware, Christina, and Brandywine Rivers, Wilmington was originally a shipping port in colonial America.  The rapid flow of the Brandywine eventually lead to milling, including the creation of the DuPont company, the largest chemical company in the world.  Since the early 1980s, banking became the next large focal point in Wilmington, as credit card companies have moved to Wilmington due to Delaware's banking laws.
