Uganda Getting There & Away

Getting There & Away

By bus There is a daily bus service between Nairobi and Kampala. There is a twice-weekly service from Kampala to Kigali (Rwanda). There are two major bus companies in Uganda travelling to Nairobi and elsewhere. One is the Scandanavian, the other is the Akamba. Both are well known, and trustworthy as much as that can be said... lol... The Scandanavian is more reliable than the Akamba, but does not do night trips, which saves time as u can sleep instead of having a rather long, hot, and tiresome journey during the day. The Akamba does both. Several bus companies offer direct lines between Kampala to Nairobi, Kigali and Dar-es-salaam. A nightbus from Kampala could start at 4 pm. to arive at 6 am. in Nairobi, costing 23000 USh. By air The Iternational airport is located in Entebbe (EBB) about 35 km (22 miles) southwest of Kampala. Coach services to Kampala depart every three hours (0800-1800). Bus services depart every two hours (0800-1600). Taxis are also available. Departure tax is US$20. Transit passengers and children under two years of age are exempt. All airline tickets purchased in Uganda must be paid for in hard currency. By train The line from Nairobi (Kenya) crosses the border at Tororo. It may be necessary to change trains to travel further into Uganda. Rail travel can be slow and uncomfortable. By road There are connections with all neighbouring countries. Road access from Kenya is good roads to Rwanda are currently being improved. The Uganda/Rwanda border is closed at weekends. There is some question as to whether border crossing may be made at the border of Uganda/Sudan and at Uganda/DRC. Both of these crossings are dicey and you will need to ask around to see if they are open and if you are able to cross there. As of July 2006, it is possible to cross from Uganda to Sudan (New Sudan) and from Uganda to DRC at Kasese. Altneratively do the trip in stages. Take a matatu or bus up to the border and walk to the other side.
