Halmstad
Overview
Halmstad dates back to the 13th century but then you are talking about the old town. The Halmstad we see today came into being at the beginning of the 14th century on the outlet of the river Nissan. There was a great fire in Halmstad in the 17th century. All that was remaining after the fire were the newly erected castle and the 15th century chuch, which is thus the oldest building in the town. A stroll around the town will show you many fine 17th and 18th century buildings. There are only remnants of the old ramparts now in existence but one: Norre Port. There are now about 78 000 inhabitants in Halmstad. The town is actively engaged in shipping and is a large commercial and industrial centre. Halmstad is also a university town and a sports centre. Fine areas for open-air actvities and well-known beaches is within its limits.
