Svalbard and Jan Mayan Islands
Overview
Visitors to Svalbard and Jan Mayan Islands will be greeted with challenging conditions. The latter has no provision for the assistance of those making the trip and the former is covered in permafrost. Svalbard is far enough north to see the Aurora Borealis, possibly in conjunction with an ice cave tour, some dog sledding or snowmobiling.
Excursions include the abandoned Russian settlement of Pyramiden, the Von Post glacier and Kapp Linné Animals which may be seen include polar bears, the arctic fox and reindeer as well as hundreds and thousands of birds.
Sites of interest will be the Svalbard Museum and Funicular centre, Gallery Svalbard and Svalbard Church. Of course there is ample opportunity for skiing which allows a closer look at the landscapes.
