Overview

Located in KwaZulu-Natal on the east coast of South Africa, on the warm shores of the Indian Ocean, Durban is the city where the sun never sets. It is a melting pot of African, European and Asian influences which heve led to a myriad of styles in the city. Architectural variety is expressed in the Victorian houses of the Berea, in the Hindu temples, the largest Mosque in the Southern Hemisphere in Grey Street, the skyscrapers in the CBD. General Health and Safety

Durban is trying its best to shake its reputation for crime. The beach strip is frequently patrolled by policemen, there are CCTV cameras and there's ample lighting at night. It is still a good idea to stick to the main streets and not go out at night unless you are very familiar with a particular area. Above all, use common sense, especially at night. Just recently (Aug 2006), there has been a increase in the crime levels and the criminals are getting bolder. So please be very careful and avoid places that seem less popular.
