Overview

The archipelago that makes up the Seychelles includes within its 115 island and islets some which are granite, not volcanic or coral, which is extremely unusual. The capital, Victoria, is on the largest island Mahé. This is the location of the international airport and a likely starting point for the generally considered pardisal islands. Further amplification is unnecessary as it certainly will fail to have the strength as an actual trip here. The same is not true of the islands political situation which has seen various colonial powers, cold war struggles and coups, the latter relatively recently.

Diving and wildlife both have a large showing throughout the land and water although the geography should not be overlooked. The UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Aldabra and the Vallé de Mai, are the largest coral atoll in the world and home to the strangely shaped double coconuts coco-de-mer respectively. Snorkelling is possible in several sites as some more challenging dives. There are hundreds of species of fish to see, but it should be noted that only certain types of fishing are permitted.

History

A lengthy struggle between France and Great Britain for the islands ended in 1814, when they were ceded to the latter. Independence came in 1976. Socialist rule was brought to a close with a new constitution and free elections in 1993. The most recent presidential elections were held in 2001; President RENE, who had served since 1977, was re-elected. In April 2004 RENE stepped down and Vice President James MICHEL was sworn in as president.
