North America
Overview
The North American continent extends northwards from the Isthmus of Panama to the Arctic Circle and includes Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean, the United States, Canada, and Greenland. It is the world's third largest continent by area and has an estimated population of 370 million.
The continent's first inhabitants are believed to be of Asian origin, having crossed over the Bering Strait roughly 20,000 years ago before moving southwards. In 986 the Vikings settled Greenland and fished off the coast of Canada, but the greatest impact on the subsequent history of the continent was Christopher Columbus landed in 1492.
Canada and the United States of America together offer destinations with almost every terrain, climate or activity imaginable. Yosemite National Park, Yellowstone, and the Grand Canyon in the United States and the Rockies in Canada are packed with inspirational views, excellent trails and the occasional bear. A few of the top destinations include, New York which offers first-rate shopping and theatre, Los Angles with excellent beaches and a chance to see the Hollywood Stars or head to Massachusetts to visit the site of the Boston Tea Party.
Mexico and Central America are the homes of both the Aztec and Mayan civilizations. Many ancient moments still exist, including the temple of El Castillo in Chichen Itza, and the Pyramids of Teotihuacán. Their frequent proximity to the ocean makes the region a great destination.
The Caribbean is a world class destination with pristine beaches, excellent hotels and lashings of rum. The 7000 islands of the Caribbean mean that a dive site is never far away.
North America is huge, even on a whistle-stop tour you could not hope to see it all. So unless you are happy to stay in one place planning well is important as journey times can be long even if you fly.
