Forget Volendam . Go to Monickendam instead.

This pleasant old town just north of amsterdam received it's city rights 650 years ago.  The old houses along the canals give you a good impression of how Holland used to be. This neighbour town of Volendam is a lot less touristic an at least as pretty.
