There is  asphalt road to Merzouga, you go over good raod that are  very well marked if you leave from Rissani.but if you leave from erfoud and planing to do some piste It⿿s recommended to travel  in a land-rover or any other 4WD and take a very good map of the area. You can also get there from Rissani by taking a taxi .

On the road to Merzouga.

Your jumping off point is Marrakesh. From there you can either hire a car and drive or head off to Ouazarzate by bus where you can arrange a tour or carry on your journey by public transport. Now while the public transport option is feasible, you've got to no way of knowing when you'll be arriving or coming back which is a problem if you are on a tight schedule or have hotels booked. Also, the tour or bus option means you don't get to stop off along the way to see and do what you want at your own pace. My advice - hire a car.
