Weekends in Merida are spectacularly special - several blocks of the city centre are shut to traffic, hundreds of food stalls are set up in the streets, selling some of the tastiest pork tacos in the whole of Mexico, and the entire city descends on the centre in the evening for salsa dancing to any one of the many bands playing in the streets. The music is wonderful and the atmosphere electric; if you are planning to visit Merida, try to make it for the weekend, because it will be one of your most memorable Mexican experiences.
