Overview

More than a hundred years ago, this part of the State of Perak was a busy tin mining area.  The present township of Sitiawan did not exit.  All Transport was by river at what is now known as Kampong Sitiawan. Elephants were largely used for heavy work, and the story goes that a cow elephant got stuck in the mining pool, all efforts to get her out failed.  Her mate a bull elephanat, refused to leave and when she died he refused to eat and also died. Sitiawan is a place that you would drive past to reach the port of Lumut where most travellers would board a ferry to the resort island of Pangkor islands . Famous for being the birthplace of many modern chinese gangsters and bohsias , Sitiawan is chiefly known as the birthplace of Malaysia's number one Communist, Chin Peng. It is a small town with only one, or at most, two functioning traffic lights where the single source of entertainment is the small shopping center of Fajar.
