Skaftafell National Park

UNRATED

Overview

Skatafell National Park is just off the ring road (Route 1) between Vik and Hofn.  There are lots of trails and it is home to Skatafellsjokull glacier.  A good trail and an hour hiking takes you to Svartifoss waterfall. The visitor centre has interesting displays including video of the 1996 glacial burst floods (caused by a volcanic eruption under the glaciers) of Skeidararsandur which wipped out roads and bridges in the area. There is a camp ground near the visitors centre.
