Alt Schwerin

Overview

Schwerin is the second largest city in "Mecklenburg-Vorpommern" and also the old residential seat of the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The former royal residence and present state capital lies in the middle of one of Germany�s most beautiful lake districts, the "Mecklenburger Seenplatte".

The Schwerin Chateau, lying on an island in Lake Schwerin is one of the most notable historic buildings in Germany and an irresistible tourist attraction as is the Schwerin Cathedral, a fine example of Gothic brick architecture. The representative Classicist buildings such as the Regional Museum, the Alte Palais, the Marstall, the State Theatre (widely regarded as one of the finest in Germany) and the Arsenal are all worth visiting. Further highlights are the Market Place, the Old Town, the many museums and the general cultural programme.

The excellent shopping facilities are appreciated by tourists and local people alike. Its superb setting on the southwest banks of Lake Schwerin and the surrounding countryside with its countless woods and lakes make the "city of the seven lakes and forests" well worth a visit.
