Pula
Overview
Situated at the southern end of the Istrian peninsula, founded three millennia ago is the city of Pula, the largest in Istria.
The remnants of this ancient Roman stronghold remain. Probably the most famous sight in Croatia lies in Pula, the extremely well preserved 1st century AD amphitheatre. At three-storey’s high it is the sixth largest amphitheatre in the world. During the summer months it is used as the focal stage for the annual Pula Opera Festival, where the fantastic acoustics of the arena are blended with the historical setting. Other key sights of interest are the Triumphal Arch of Sergius, the Temple of Augustus and the Citadel. The beaches, little more than rocky outcrops are located outside the town, as are the camping ground and many of the local hotels.
Pula’s historical sights are a must see if you are in the Istrian Peninsula, but if you would prefer to recline on a beach the short ferry ride to Mali Losinj provides an attractive alternative.
