Poreč
Overview
Poreč is situated on a rocky headland protruding into the Adriatic Sea and is the focal tourist destination on the Istrian peninsula. The original Roman town layout remains and the narrow passageways, streets and even the harbour are lined with tall Venetian-style pastel terraced houses provide a picturesque setting. The key historical site in Poreč is the 6th-century Euphrasian Basilica, a world Heritage site and one of the best preserved examples of Byzantine art in the world. Accommodation is not cheap in Poreč, the town has few hotels but all are generally in good condition. For cheaper accommodation you have to head to the overpopulated camping grounds to the south of the city, the Zelena Laguna (Green Lagoon) and Plava Laguna (Blue Lagoon) and well situated for the local beaches. However these are fairly poor and either rocky or clad with concrete. Unless you enjoy the Euro-Camping experience, Croatia has many superior camping and beach based destinations.
