History

Costa Rica is a Central American success story: since the late 19th century, only two brief periods of violence have marred its democratic development. It disbanded its army in 1948 and since then has invested in health and education. Although still a largely agricultural country producing bananas, coffee and cattle, it has expanded its economy to include strong technology and tourism sectors. The standard of living is relatively high. Land ownership is widespread. It is renowned for its biodiversity being home to an estimated 50,000 species and has long attracted biologists from all over the world. Ticos are keen to protect this heritage and over 25% of the country is legally protected. In addition there are numerous private nature reserves which are also open to tourists.
