Santa Fe de Antioquia

Overview

Santa Fe de Antioquia is the oldest town in the region. It was founded in 1541 and prospered in the days of Spanish Colonial rule. The town is located some 80 km nort of Medellin , on the road to Turbo .

The historic centre is breathtaking and a stroll through the old streets gives you the chance to admire the many decorated doorways of the houses, the patios full of flowers and the carved wooden guards.  The doors of the old colonial houses are enormous, fit for a giraffe.

Main sights include the Iglesia de Santa Barbara, the Museo del Corral and the Museo de Arte Religioso.

Six km east of town is the Puente de Occidente, an unusual bridge over the Rio Cauca, which was built by a famous engineer. It was one of the first suspension bridges in the world and possibly the first in South America.
