Central America
Overview
Central America lies between Colombia and Mexico, encompassing the seven nations of Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Belize.
Over the millennia, the erosion of volcanic rock, produced in this geologically active area, has led to rich and fertile soils. The Mayan civilisation prospered from these lands and built many ancient cities. Although many of these have now been lost to the jungle and remain unexcavated a few have been uncovered and are accessible. Two of the most notable are Lamanai in Belize, and the Copan Ruins in Honduras which rise from the tangled jungle.
Today, the region is a blend of indigenous culture with a European influence. Local markets are situated next to colonial architecture with difference ethnic groups living side by side.
The coast is lined by beautiful palm beaches and reefs filled with colorful fish. There are ample opportunities for diving, windsurfing and sunbathing allover the region.
There has been a large growth in ecotourism with the region, and offers the more adventurous the chance to aid the ailing jaguar in Belize or increase the likelihood of successful turtle nesting in Costa Rica.
