Overview

The 7000 islands that make up the territories of the Caribbean can be found between the southeastern areas of Mexico and the northwest of Venezuala. The name originates from the Amerindian group, the Caribs, that was dominant in the region at the time of initial European contact. The efforts and influence of the European colonising powers remain apparent today with the existence of overseas departments and dependencies side by side with sovereign states. The islands still hold a range of architecture which against the frequently paradise like palm lined beaches adds to the level of escapism possible. There really is a strong feeling of being transported to another world. The archetypal image of the perfect beach can be found in abundance in reality all over the region. Sometimes there will be a twist and the sand will be volcanic and black rather than bright white. Whether or not the beaches are isolated and deserted depends on the development of the tourist industry on the particular island and how much effort the visitor is willing to go to gain some seclusion.

It will not surprise the prospective visitor that as the Caribbean includes large stretches of water that such sports are prevalent. Diving is extremely popular and the visitor really has a large number of dive sites to choose from. The business visitor will undoubtedly be aware of the numerous tax havens used by quite an assortment of people. There are a number of volcanoes still active in the region, but as long as the visitor obeys the local protocols these should not pose too much of a risk and could be of interest to many. Rum is a local drink which comes in many guises and could be sipped while watching the especially popular cricket and beach volleyball or simply while gazing out at the vast expanses of clear water.
