Poltical Situation

Bhutan is a monarchy. King Jigme Singye Wangchuk is the fourth hereditary king of Bhutan. He is a very good king whose top priority has always been the welfare and happiness of the people. He enjoys very great popularity among all sections of his people.

In 1998, he initiated major changes in the Government. He gave away his executive powers to an elected cabinet. The candidates for the ministers are nominated by the king and elected by the people's representatives in the National Assembly by a secret ballot to their posts for a term of five years.

Development works are carried out in terms of five-year plan periods. The government holds the preservation of Bhutanese tradition and culture and the conservation of our natural environment as something that cannot be compromised while making plans for economic development.

Under the present system, the government is stable and the country is secure. Despite recent battles with ULPA BODO groups.
