Belize Overview
Overview
Belize is a compact little gem of a country. In the middle of Central America, it blends a variety of cultures from the ancient Mayan to Caribbean, Latin as well as more recent colonial influences. This is reflected in the attitudes of the laid back friendly people, the buildings of Belize City and the food.
Tropical jungle extends inland to the borders of Guatemala in the west and Mexico in the north offering numerous trekking possibilities for even the most enthusiastic walker. Highlights include Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, inhabited by several species of wildcats, such as Jaguars and Pumas. Along side this scenery sit relics from Mayan cultures such as those at Caracol and the ruins in Tikal, which can be reached easily from a number of places within Belize.
Along the coast you can chose to do as much or as little as you like. Low-level beach resorts are dotted along the Caribbean coast and offer the chance to sit back and watch the world go by in the comfort of your hammock. Tiny islands span the coastline offering the opportunity to escape from it all. Explore the peace and tranquillity of the southern cayes or spend a few days in the more bustling atmosphere of Ambergris and Caye Caulker.
Belize's underwater world is as good a match for its beauty on land. With the second largest barrier reef in the world, there is enough to keep even the most adventurous diver happy, including one of the top ten dive sites, the Blue Hole. Spot sea turtles, sharks and stingrays on the many unspoilt and secluded reefs and atolls.
A traveller's heaven, Belize combines wonderful sandy beaches, deserted islands, Mayan ruins, world-class dive sites, jungle trekking and a mixture of cultures all within a country not much larger than Wales.
